Are electric cars really better for the environment?

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 15:55:26 GMT

(iSeeCars) -- The U.S. transportation sector is in the midst of an aggressive push to replace fossil fuels and the internal combustion engine with renewable energy and zero emissions electric vehicles. Government incentives have recently been updated to encourage not only the sale of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), but increased domestic production of battery packs, electric motors, and EV charging stations. While the desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change is admirable, analysis of a gasoline vehicle’s total environmental impact must be compared to an electric vehicle’s complete carbon footprint to understand which vehicle design is truly better for the planet. Zero tailpipe emissions are the most obvious advantages electric cars have over gasoline cars, but if the power plant charging an EV isn’t using renewable energy sources the electric vehicle’s low-carbon advantage falls dramatically. The manufacturing process – along with the eventual destruction ...

Shelters continue to fill near flooded Pajaro River in Monterey County. More danger is looming

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 15:55:26 GMT

Evacuation shelters continued to fill early Sunday morning in areas near the Pajaro River, where a breached levee has forced thousands of people, many of them farmworkers, to flee from flood waters. And in the distance, another atmospheric river continued with Jaws-like relentlessness to push toward the California coast. Its projected path was expected to further affect the flooded areas, and perhaps create new ones.“We’re keeping a close eye on the Salinas River,” Monterey County spokesperson Nicholas Pasculli said Sunday morning. “That’s a big concern for us (Sunday).”A flood warning went into effect at 1 a.m. for the Salinas River near Spreckels, and residents there were urged to be prepared to seek higher ground. The river is a rare one is that it flows south to north, and Pasculli said areas along the river from Greenfield to the south and Gonzales in the north may be in peril. As of Sunday morning, 3,400 people were under evacuation orders or ...

By CHRIS MEGERIAN (Associated Press)WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Sunday that the federal government would not bail out Silicon Valley Bank, but is working to help depositors who are concerned about their money. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insures deposits up to $250,000, but many of the companies and wealthy people who used the bank — known for its relationships with technology startups and venture capital — had more than that amount in their account. There are fears that some workers across the country won’t receive their paychecks.Yellen, in an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation,” provided few details on the government’s next steps. But she emphasized that the situation was much different from the financial crisis almost 15 years ago, which led to bank bailouts to protect the industry.“We’re not going to do that again,” she said. “But we are concerned about depositors, and we’re focused on trying to meet their needs.”With Wall Street ...

BERLIN (AP) — Japan midfielder Ritsu Doan struck late for Freiburg to beat Hoffenheim 2-1 on Sunday and leave American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo’s team bottom of the Bundesliga. It was Matarazzo‘s fifth defeat in five games since taking over as Hoffenheim coach and it stretched the team’s winless run to 14 games. The visitors got off to a terrible start with Maximilian Eggestein scoring for Freiburg in the fifth minute. Hoffenheim struggled to break through Freiburg’s well-organized defense but finally saw its persistence rewarded when Munas Dabbur set up Angelo Stiller to equalize after the break. Matarazzo brought on attacking players with 15 minutes remaining as he went for the win, then saw defender Ozan Kabak sent off with his second yellow card for knocking the ball away in the 84th. There was still time for Doan to score with a volley of Noah Weißhaupt’s cross in the 89th. The win lifted Freiburg to fourth place. Union Berlin was a point behind before its game later at Wolfs...

Flyers interim GM Briere believes franchise needs a rebuild

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 15:55:26 GMT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Danny Briere is not reluctant to say the word his predecessor willfully avoided when plotting the best course for the forlorn Flyers: rebuilding.Briere knows the Flyers are a mess — the depressed state of the team a topic former general manager Chuck Fletcher rarely addressed head-on — and is using what time he has as the interim GM to show he’s the right person to fix them. That starts with the hard truth.“I don’t think this is a quick fix,” Briere said Sunday. “That’s my belief and that’s why I’m not afraid to use the word rebuild.”Briere was promoted to interim general manager on Friday and replaced Fletcher after he was fired following 4 1/2 seasons and only one playoff appearance. The Flyers have just 24 wins, their 59 points are third-fewest in the Eastern Conference and they will miss the playoffs for a third straight season.Yes, the record was abysmal, but what ultimately doomed Fletcher was his inability to settle on a true plan to turn the Flyers into a ...
