Ask Amy: We made it through this horrible wedding, and then we learned the couple’s secret

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:40:25 GMT

Dear Amy: Your recent answer to “Disgruntled Guest” regarding a destination wedding inspired me to write. For those who want to have a destination wedding, my suggestion is to focus on each other and the moment. Come home afterward and have a gathering with family and friends. My wife and I attended a formal beach wedding. Sand was blowing and we couldn’t hear the officiant over the waves. Afterward, we attended a formal dinner and ate the worst food ever.We attended out of obligation, an obligation I wish we’d never agreed to. It was five days of enforced partying with a small group of people we wouldn’t choose to vacation with. (We gave the couple a very generous gift, as well.)Then we learned that they were married by a judge months before their destination wedding.A few months after the destination wedding, they had a very large formal gathering again, and more money was forked out.It was the Never-ending Wedding!– Never AgainDear Never Again: I’m picturing a marrying ...

Remaining Ripe for Rain

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:40:25 GMT

A front across central Florida is starting to stall, trapping plenty of moisture across the southern half of the state. This will keep rain chances higher than normal through the remainder of the work week at a 50-70% chance. This Tuesday, winds flip back out of the east but with steering winds more out of the south. This setup will allow for the anytime risk of seeing showers and thunderstorms, especially midday, but that threat for rain will also last into the evening and overnight tonight. With the earlier onset of rain compared to on Monday, that should hold high temperatures closer to normal in the upper 80s to low 90s.Wednesday is looking fairly similar with the front stalled practically right across the area. With the risk for heavy rain still in place, the threat for flooding will exist in spots. Through Sunday, a widespread 1-3 inches of rainfall is forecast, with isolated higher amounts.By Thursday, a weak area of low pressure is forecast to develop along this stalled front...

Elon Musk: Twitter (sorry, X) could go behind a paywall

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:40:25 GMT

Tech billionaire Elon Musk said he plans to start charging all users of X, his social media platform formerly known as Twitter.“We are moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the X system,” Musk said during a live-streamed conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. “It’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots.”Musk and Netanyahu discussed the rise of AI and ways to curb antisemitism and hate speech on X. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO said X currently has about 550 million monthly users posting between 100 to 200 million posts per day, and “some of those are going to be bad.” When asked about ways to prevent fake accounts from amplifying hateful posts, Musk said setting up a paywall for the site is the “only defense,” as a subscription would make it harder for bots to create multiple accounts using multiple credit cards.“A bot costs a fraction of a penny … but if someone has to pay a few dollars or a minor amount,...

Emergency crews were called to an apartment building on Tremont Street in Brighton late Monday night after a 30-foot retaining wall collapsed. Residents of the building near Oak Square say the retaining wall was recently replaced and several parked cars were damaged when it came down. One woman said her vehicle was shifted 10 feet by mud that came rushing through the collapsed wall. The area of the collapse was still blocked off with caution tape early Tuesday morning and officials have not said how long it will take to repair.“There’s just a river of mud around the building,” said Wesley Ratliff, who heard the wall come down.Carla Leite, who said the wall was replaced in May, is now wondering if the people who built it considered drainage and other issues. She’s also wondering if the collapse had anything to do with new homes being constructed a street over. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation. No additional information was immediately availab...

Drying Out

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:40:25 GMT

Blah! Another dose of wet weather we did not want and did not need yesterday as 2-3″ of rain fell across much of the region. Once again, prompting some basement flooding and some street flooding. Stating the obvious, we’re well above average year to date. Year to date (January 1st-today), we’re running the 11th wettest on record in Boston. In terms of wettest years (January-December) on record, we’d need about another 17″ to crack the top 5. 1878 holds the wettest year on record with the 1950s taking up the next 4 slots. This morning, we wake up to dry air in place with a busy breeze out of the west, gusting 20-30mph. That’ll help dry out the ground through the day as returning sunshine also makes for a very pleasant afternoon ahead. Humidity will be lowering too. Essentially, the next several days look great. 70s by day, 50s by night, with mostly sunny skies winning out. The next rain chance returns Saturday night/Sunday as we watch to see how f...
