(KRON) -- A man accused of molesting a child in San Jose died in his jail cell over the weekend, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office. The 74-year-old man was alone in his cell when deputies found him unresponsive at 2:05 p.m. Saturday. Deputies assigned to the Santa Clara County Mail Jail performed CPR on the inmate. He was declared dead at 2:55 p.m."Preliminary information shows no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances leading to the death," Sgt. Russell Davis wrote. The inmate's name was not released on Monday. He was booked into jail three years ago for multiple charges of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 years old, Davis said. The charges stemmed from a San Jose Police Department investigation. The in-custody death incident will be further investigated by the Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office.

San Francisco DA releases video of Walgreens security guard fatally shooting alleged shoplifter

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco’s district attorney Monday released surveillance video showing the fatal shooting of a suspected shoplifter by an on-duty Walgreens security guard, along with other footage and documents that she said support her decision not to file charges against the guard.District Attorney Brooke Jenkins released the information amid public outcry over the April 27 death of Banko Brown, a 24-year-old who was not armed, outside a downtown Walgreens. Last week, the Board of Supervisors approved a resolution urging her office and the police department to release more evidence. She cited self-defense in her decision not to charge the guard, Michael Earl-Wayne Anthony. But the release of surveillance video did not appear to quell critics in a city dogged by brazen shoplifting and wide division over the appropriate responses to crime, particularly when the suspect is homeless or impoverished. The footage, which does not have sound, shows Brown heading for the do...

Ja Morant in limbo again as he awaits review of latest gun video on social media

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:10:38 GMT

Ja Morant still had his endorsement deals Monday. While his latest gun video on social media is costing him plenty in public relations currency, he hasn’t lost any money.Any, or all, of that could change any day. Once again, Morant is in limbo — awaiting the outcome of yet another NBA investigation into what could end up becoming a cataclysmic off-court decision.“This is going to be a hot question,” Syracuse professor of sport management Rick Burton said Monday. “I don’t think they can hit pause on this. I think that there will be too much demand for, ‘What are you going to do?’”The NBA already suspended the two-time All-Star guard eight games in March for livestreaming himself holding an apparent handgun in Colorado. That cost him about $669,000 in salary. How Morant’s sponsors react to him being caught on social media apparently holding a weapon for the second time in less than three months is another issue. Morant has endorsement deals with Nike and the sports drink Powerad...

Shohei Ohtani blasts 456-foot homer, reaches base 5 times and earns win as Angels beat Orioles, 9-5

The Orioles were in a much different place the only other time they faced Shohei Ohtani. It was Aug. 25, 2021, and the Orioles, in the midst of a 110-loss season, had lost 19 straight games — the most by an MLB team since 2005. They were facing Ohtani, the two-way wonder in the midst of his American League Most Valuable Player campaign, and it seemed inevitable that their streak would reach 20.Baltimore is now a near-180 from that team. Entering the week with the second-best record in the major leagues, the organization is on the other side of the rebuild that caused those dark days in 2021 and before. But, ironically, these Orioles couldn’t do what those Orioles somehow did — complete a comeback against the Angels’ bullpen after Ohtani exited the game. Ohtani the pitcher tossed seven innings for the win, while Ohtani the hitter was a double away from his second cycle and blasted a three-run home run off Grayson Rodriguez to hand the Orioles a 9-5 loss.“M...
